Some days are easier than others to rise and shine, as getting your beauty sleep can be kind of an elusive task. Check out our list of tips so you can wake up looking rested and refreshed, even if that's not always how you feel:

1. Take off all of your makeup.

Make sure you take it all of it off, every night. Sleeping with makeup on not only clogs your pores and causes unnecessary breakouts, but can also cause breakage of your lashes from leftover mascara, irritate your eyes and stain your pillowcase. Your skin needs to breathe, rest, and heal overnight just as you do--keeping makeup on prevents you from being able to do that properly.

2. Moisturize

Nightly moisturizing is important to prevent and smooth wrinkles and to encourage overnight healing of daily damage. If you want to splurge, you can use a night cream or serum containing hyaluronic acid and/or retinoids to promote anti-ageing, or you can keep it simple with a standard moisturizer (doesn't even have to be for the face). We also recommend a swipe of lip balm at night as well.

3. Change your pillowcase often

Your pillowcase collects the oil that comes off your face at night. Even if you wash your face before bed, your face still excretes oil during its repairing cycle overnight. Change your pillowcase once a week to avoid picking up excess oil, and flip your pillow over every night to cut down the time you spend sleeping on each side.

4. Sleep with your hair up

Have you ever noticed breakouts around your hairline? That's caused by the oil in your hair clogging the pores on your face. By gently pulling your hair up at night, you can avoid these breakouts and avoid nightly hair breakage from tossing and turning.

5. Sleep with a humidifier on

Even with a moisturizer, both winter weather and air conditioning can dry out your skin. Using a humidifier at night to remedy dryness is one of the best-kept beauty secrets. It encourages hydration overnight so you wake up with supple, radiant skin.

6. Avoid salty foods before bed

Too much sodium in your diet (especially before bed) can cause your eyelids to retain excess fluid, causing puffy eyes in the morning. If you like salty foods, monitor it like caffeine--enjoy it in the morning and early afternoon, but not before bed. If you do happen to indulge before bed, sleep with an extra pillow to prop up your head to prevent fluid from pooling in your skin.
